Maruti SX4: Heck of an upstart to the City

Maruti is getting an image makeover. Besides being a mass producer of compact cars, it wants to be a respectable premium carmaker as well. So, it launched the SX4 and they hope, it makes more of an impression on customers than the Baleno did.

It will be a brand new platform for Maruti, which is changing with the times. It happened with the Swift, the Estillo and now with the SX4. The SX4 is an all-new car and the front of this car looks hot. It has a U-shaped bonnet, inset headlamps, a heavyset bumper leading into a sporty air dam, which gives it a dashing racy look. With the rear fender that tilts up into the bumper and the roof-line that swoops down into the bonnet, this gives the impression of an athlete waiting to takeoff from the starting block.

What is also striking is the interior of the car. It's is very sporty, very clean and very nice looking. The ZXi model is definitely very upmarket. It comes with leather seats, flush mounted CD changer, audio system controls on the steering, height adjusted seats, automatic temperature control and auto adjustable side view mirrors. Some of these features will be available on the VXi variant as well. The neat dials, curved dashboard, chrome flashes on the side of the central console and the sporty gear knob all catches the eye. This interior looks slick.

Those who get chauffeured around, this backseat is really good and there is a lot of glass area in this car, so, it gives a very roomy and airy feel to the cabin. Seating and visibility is high and thigh support is good. The backrest is at a perfect incline, so, lumbar support is good. Long journeys in this one can be extremely comfortable.

But it's not going to be only about looks. The car handles pretty well and corners nicely. The wide tyres give it grip and it has got good body control for a car that has got a high ground clearance and high centre of gravity. The ZXi comes with 16-inch alloys and 205/60 tyres which can be called the widest in the segment. Add to that ABS, EBD and airbags and you have even more value-addition. The electronic power steering is a little light and doesn't inspire confidence, when driving straight ahead at high speeds. The clutch is hydraulically operated and the gear shift has a nice short positive throw.

The SX4's 1.6 litre engine now comes with a 102bhp and a healthy 145 nm torque. The torque band comes in at 2000 rpm till about 4000. It loses a little steam at the top-end but its plus point is that its driveable and you can amble around in low gears, with no need to shift that often. This engine design makes it a refined machine to drive. Though it lacks the zesty punch of the Esteem, it's still quick. However, the bottom-end isn't its strength and has linear acceleration. It cruises well on the highway and overtaking is a breeze.


The ride quality gets a thumbs up. It is soft, pliant and soaks up the bumps and undulations. So, Maruti loyalists should be happy to have a well thought out car. This car drives nicely, has a lot of space, the top-end version comes fully loaded with good features. For those wanting diesel rides, there is always the Verna and the Fiesta but others looking for petrol cars, take a look at this before anything else. It is expected to be priced between Rs 6.75 to Rs 8 lakhs. Maruti would hope the SX4 scores for it in the midsize segment, where the SX4 meets the Honda City, which is the leader in the segment.

Excellent reviews and collection of reviews. Your blogs provide the best information on SX4.

By the way I just booked the car without any information on Mileage. Hey I also feel that you should point out the drawbacks in the car. The major drawbacks are:

1. Mileage information not available.
2. Backseat / Legroom at the back is a little cramped as compared to the City.
3. Just my feeling after test drive, reversing the car is a little painful as the vision from the inside rear view mirror is not very good.
4. Interiors are not in the same league as Honda City

However rest of the features are great and I feel that the SX4 is much more value for manoey as compared to any other car in the segment. As some reviewer said "i shall recommend one just for the safety features !"

Now that you are in possession of the beauty and the beast,

(1)does the audio system have a remote and USB port
(2)practically,how bad is the middle of the rear seat
(3)how good is the a/c in Delhi's summer
(4)is there an a/c vent at the rear.One of the pictures gave me that impression
(5)any idea of mileage. Looking forward to hearing from you.

your reviews are really set my mind back. i was really thinking on hondacit zx.i want to know whether sx4 zxi beat honda in perfomance way?my friend who owns a hondacity testdrives sx4 and hez not impressed with perfomance.im damn confused to buy sx4 now as all will blame if my selection gets wrong.can u please help me

Here are the answers for your questions:

(1) Does the audio system have a remote and USB port?
[PT]:- Yes, Audio system has a remote but no USB port, however it has a Aux input port in case you want to connect with external players i.e. iPod or any other one
(2) Practically, how bad is the middle of the rear seat?
[PT]:- Personally I feel It’s enough for people up to 5ft 10 inch height (Which is my height :))
(3) How good is the a/c in Delhi's summer
[PT]:- AC is perfectly Cool and provides sufficient cooling. It’s auto climate control and auto air circulation maintain the required cooling in car
(4)Is there an a/c vent at the rear. One of the pictures gave me that impression
[PT]:- Frankly saying I don’t aware of, but yes vent is in front and there is a rear glass defogger. All air circulations, vent and temperature controlled automatically by sensors so does not a point to worry much. However you can control it manually too.
(5) Any idea of mileage
[PT]:- Not measured yet. I think it can be commented only after first service of the vehicle. But as per my experience it’s some where around 10-12 KMPL.

Gr8 reviews on ur blog..... all these would definitely help in excellent choice amongst the "C-SEGMENT" war.

Amongst SX4/HONDA/CITY/FIESTA/ VERNA/AVEO my personal choice is MARUTI's SX4 Zxi....... why not, since, its providing u with the luxary of a 9 Lakh sedan(Gurgaon price). Prior to SX4 my liking was Honda City VTEC, for gr8 honda's engine/ odometer/alloys and 100bhp- 8.0 Lakh, a clear diff of 1.10 Lakh and that too without gr8 SX4 features.

Its the only sedan in C-segment which thinks for necessary safety features, as ur life is precious (Twin air bags/ABS-EBD/iCATS) and luxary features(Integrated stereo/Audio cont. on steering/16"alloys(TT)/auto AC/CL/Int. stereo/EPS,etc)& rest are in Merc/BMW/RR, etc not in a sedan @ 6.90 Lakh. For me the plus is max ground clearance (190 mm) in a sedan running on Indian roads.

Well I have been planning to buy a sedan (7-8 Lakh price range) since early 2007, but was eagerly waiting for new launches of 2007, till the muscular SX4 was launched that too with EXCELLENT ADD-ONS which dazzled me and left me with no second option/choice at this price tag.

NOW FOR ME SX4 IS CLEAR WINNER WITH 3 cons: MILEAGE, REAR CENTER SEAT & LEG ROOM AND BACK VIEW FROM INSIDE ??????? for me mileage is not a big concern, since my city usage would be around 300-400 kms and a single highway run in a month(Gurgaon-Shimla-Gurgaon) about 850 kms. Still please educate me wisely for mileage(C/H both)...

Guys can u comment on these areas or suggest MUL for a solution since almost every review says these 3 cons..

Waiting for a wise & quick reply, since I have booked my METALLIC SUPREME RED ZXI three weeks ago in Gurgaon, its about to be delivered.........
